Confused by Fashion Magazines? A Guide to Choosing the Right Reading for You
Clearance shopping has wound down and the stores and catalogs are showing us merchandise for fall. Does it really have to be time to turn our attention away from summer to fall? I say "no!" Let's look at the introduction of fall fashions from another angle. As the new season's looks are hitting the stores they are also making a splash at the newsstands. Which of these magazines will you carry off in your beach bag?
How do you choose the your fashion reading? Fairly often, I think we find ourselves doing things because we think that we should or because we are convinced that there is only one right way to do things. Not even close! We approach the newsstand hoping for some guidance or insight on make-up, hairstyles or the new season's fashions, and we feel like we need to make a choice from the front row magazines. Some of these will be great for some of us and for others, they are left wanting.
Before you make your selection, consider the following criteria to help make a more informed choice about what to read with regards to fashion.
Read the Index
Check out the index first. If you do not want to read the articles you do not want to buy the magazine!
Does your fashion reading reflect your personal style?
- Would you consider wearing any of the fashion selections they may be showing?
- Are the models attractive to you?
- Does the magazine address your age, beauty concerns and ethnicity?
Does your fashion reading reflect your lifestyle concerns?
- Does the magazine address fashion issues that are relevant to you? (e.g., Travel wardrobes, career fashion, eveningwear, casual wear)
- How much time do you think it will take you to read the magazine you're considering? Is it time you want to spend?
- Does the over-all feel of the magazine reflect your lifestyle? (Ex. Urban, rural, self-employed, mother, corporate worker)
If you answer no to more than one or two of these questions you may be choosing something that is not right for you and will only frustrate and confuse you.
Making the Right Choice
There are a lot more selections out here than there used to be. One way to consider your options is to preview your possible selections on-line. A site on-line www.epinions.com lists reviews by readers of various magazines. This can be helpful.
Consider Non-traditional Sources.
Are there magazines you already read or would consider reading that contain articles about fashion? There are many lifestyle magazines (e.g., Real Simple( www.realsimple.com/realsimple/), Good Housekeeping (www.goodhousekeeping.com/), Organic Style (www.organicstyle.com/), Walking) that do address fashion as part of their regular content. Ask your trusted friends or image consultant about what they read.
Time is Always a Factor!
Maybe reading a monthly magazine will take too much time for you. Consider getting something that comes every other month or quarterly. You could also split a subscription with a friend. This can put a limit on the pile of recycling that goes out the door unread.
Just like our favorite shopping advice--if you don't love it don't buy it--if you won't enjoy the reading don't buy the magazine.
Want to know what we read?
We each get many different magazines but here are our two faves!
Kate's Favorites: Real Simple and In-Style
Ginger's Favorites: Grace and Marie Claire
Another magazine to consider -- Lucky (www.luckymag.com/). It's a shopping magazine designed to help you know where to look for what. It tends to be a bit on the trendy side and has lots of information, so if you are easily overwhelmed it may or may not be a good choice for you.
Happy reading! Enjoy the rest of summer.
